Free Lunch-and-Learn Series for Nonprofits: Digital Skills Toolkit

Join the Centre for Community Partnerships this year
for bite-sized learning to level up your digital skills

These virtual lunch-and-learn sessions, led by U of T researchers and specialists as well as nonprofit sector experts, are designed to equip nonprofit professionals with foundational skills, practical tools, and insight into current best practices in key areas including data analysis and AI.

Who are these workshops for? These workshops are for community-based organizations (nonprofit, public, and grassroots) who are partnering with the University of Toronto. All community organization staff are welcome to attend. Please share this free opportunity with colleagues within your organization. 

Good data analysis starts with how you collect and organize your data. Join us for a hands-on Excel workshop to strengthen your skills through survey design tips and intermediate spreadsheet techniques.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Gain tips for designing your survey, registration form, or other collection tool so the data you gather is clean and easy to work with 
  • Learn techniques for cleaning and organizing raw data  
  • Increase your confidence with Excel formulas and tools to start to manipulate your datasets

Make the most of Excel to understand your data and tell stories about your work. This hands-on workshop will help you draw insight from your data with greater ease, through intermediate spreadsheet techniques and data visualization tips. 

In this workshop, you will:  

  • Increase your confidence with Excel tools to explore trends, patterns, and key metrics 
  • Gain tips on creating easy-to-read data visualizations (charts, graphs, and dashboards)  
  • Learn to develop simple dashboards to track and present results

Facilitator bio: Gina Fong is Coordinator at The BRIDGE Finance and Data Lab, at the University of Toronto Scarborough Library, where she delivers workshops on data fundamentals, as well as workshops and other content on financial skill development. Gina is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto Scarborough’s Bachelor of Business Administration Co-op Program specializing in Management and Finance.

Join us for a no-nonsense introduction to GenAI. Equip yourself with foundational information that will support your critical awareness and help you navigate GenAI safely as a nonprofit sector worker, wherever you fall on the spectrum of AI adoption. 

In this webinar you will: 

  • Gain a clearer basic understanding of GenAI  
  • Increase your confidence in safely and responsibly engaging with GenAI on an individual level  
  • Increase your awareness of risks and ethical issues with AI relevant to the nonprofit sector 
  • Explore tools and examples of GenAI use in the nonprofit sector and other workplaces 

Organizations across sectors are seeking intentional approaches to AI adoption. Hear from specialists from the University of Toronto and the nonprofit sector on key considerations for safe and responsible engagement with AI at the organizational level, and where to begin with developing guidelines for AI use.

Medha Aurora is a Research and Evaluation Associate at LogicalOutcomes, where she facilitates mixed-methods research and evaluation across diverse sectors including data equity, health and wellness, education, youth development, community development, and newcomer support. As part of LogicalOutcomes AI Lab, Medha specializes in co-designing and administering AI applications for nonprofits.

Sophie Llewelyn is Director of Evaluation at LogicalOutcomes, where she leads complex data systems projects and evaluation work. Sophie builds nonprofit capacity to use data and technology for learning and improvement. She leads LogicalOutcomes’ Generative AI Lab for Nonprofits, an OTF-funded initiative to support Ontario nonprofits to access, develop and deploy AI tools in ways that are inclusive, responsible and mission-driven.

Professor Susan McCahan is Associate Vice-President and Vice-Provost, Digital Strategies and Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education. She recently served as Provostial Advisor on Artificial Intelligence, chairing the University Task Force on AI which yielded the report: “Toward an AI-Ready University”. She currently is overseeing implementation of the report recommendations.

Alex Olson is Acting Head of the University of Toronto’s Centre for Analytics and AI Engineering (CARTE). Collaborating with faculty, staff, and students, Alex explores innovative ways to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their work. He is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge applied AI research and promoting the practical implementation of AI solutions.
